AWARD RECOGNISES SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT AT ORRETS MEADOW SCHOOL 

Orrets Meadow School in Wirral, Merseyside is celebrating after being recognised for its commitment to competitive sport by achieving the prestigious GOLD Sainsbury’s School Games Mark award.

The Sainsbury's School Games, which is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England, and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, provide a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country by encouraging them to take part in competitive school sport.

The Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, at county/area level and a national event for the most talented school age athletes.

To recognise good practice schools are encouraged to apply for Mark to celebrate their achievement and Orrets Meadow School has been successful in achieving the GOLD standard.

Over the last year Orrets Meadow has taken part in a range of competitive sporting opportunities including: Athletics, Basketball, Boccia, Cricket, Dance, Goalball, Fencing, Football, Handball, Hockey, Indoor Canoeing, Judo, Netball, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball.

Mrs Duncan, Headteacher said:

“Gold Award! Well done to all the staff and pupils of Orrets Meadow. Special thanks go to Mr Saul, PE leader, for the enthusiasm and commitment he has shown to developing PE across the school over the year. A fantastic achievement and a brilliant way to end the year!” 

 Mr Saul, PE and School Sport Leader at Orrets Meadow said:

“It is a tremendous achievement for all the staff and pupils at Orrets Meadow. Everybody has worked so hard to create such a wide range of engaging and competitive sporting opportunities for the children. Our pupils have shown a great enthusiasm for PE and sport and have played a big part in helping to lead, manage and officiate in the games too. We look forward to enjoying more sporting opportunities in the coming academic year. ” 

Ali Oliver, Interim Chief Executive Officer at the Youth Sport Trust, said: 

‘We would like to congratulate and thank Orrets Meadow School for the great job they are doing with offering competitive sport to more young people. At the Youth Sport Trust we recognise and promote the value and importance of competitive school sport not only to drive physical activity levels, but also to develop young people’s life skills, character and resilience. There is now an overwhelming amount of evidence that indicates active young people do better in school and life.’

 Mike Diaper, Sport England Director of Community Sport, said: 

“The Sainsbury’s School Games is a fantastic way for young people to get into sport and Orrets Meadow School deserves this recognition for its commitment and dedication to developing the competition at school and in the local community.” 

The Sainsbury’s School Games is supported by a range of partners including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England, Youth Sport Trust, Department of Health and British Paralympic Association.
